Is 2026 a good year to sell a business in Illinois?
It is a good year to sell a prepared file. It is a bad year to sell a hope. We will cite the 2026 marketplace reports we are allowed to use — and we will not invent a premium. This page is year-stamped and due for a January refresh.

Marketplace context for 2026 — not a forecast
BizBuySell’s Q2 2026 Insight Report is the current marketplace snapshot we will use on this site: 45% of sellers cited retirement, 35% of owners had no idea of value, 14% used a professional valuation, median sale $349,250, 2.7× cash-flow multiple, 0.7× revenue multiple, Service businesses 155 median days on market, 2,117 closed deals in the reported period. Those are the numbers. They are not “Illinois is on fire” and they are not “wait until 2028.”
The Q4 2025 Insight Report found 44% of sellers prioritized a fast or low-stress close versus 28% who prioritized top dollar. That split is a 2026 process choice. If you want speed, recast and accept structure. If you want top dollar, do not grant a long exclusive to the first platform letter. See PE offers.
The Exit Planning Institute still reports that 27% of Boomer owners have a formal valuation and 5% have a documented exit team. EPI readiness. A “good year” does not fix an unprepared owner. A prepared owner can sell in a normal year. See the 2026–2030 exit-wave piece and 2026 multiples notes on this site — those articles are ours; we still will not invent new statistics here.
This page should be rewritten when the next year arrives
What we will update
Cited report editions, the H1, and any year-specific Illinois items (tax law, SBA SOP) that actually change. We will not keep a 2026 title as evergreen bait.
What will not change
File quality still beats headlines. Bulk Sales, SOS, licenses, and leases still set Illinois calendars. Success fee, no upfront listing fee. Timelines.
If you are choosing between this year and “someday,” read is it time and sell and retire. SBA: 7(a). Valuation: get a range.
Hypothetical only: two owners with the same SDE, one with a five-year assignable lease and a manager, one who is the only technician on a month-to-month. 2026 is a good year for the first file and a lecture for the second. The year is not the variable.
It is a good year to sell a prepared file. It is a bad year to sell a hope.
Is 2026 a good year to sell a business in Illinois? It is a usable year if your file is ready. We will not invent a 2026 premium and we will not say the market is hot. BizBuySell’s Q2 2026 Insight Report gives marketplace context — 2,117 closings, median sale $349,250, 2.7 average cash-flow multiple, 0.7 average revenue multiple, 155 median days on market for service businesses — not a promise that your shop clears in five months.
This page is year-stamped because “is this a good year” is a dated question. We will refresh the cited reports and the framing in January 2027. If you are reading this after that refresh, check the report links for the newest editions. We will not keep a 2026 title as evergreen bait.
Median cash flow in that Q2 report was $155,921 and median revenue $692,087. Fourteen percent of owners had a professional valuation; 35 percent had no idea of value; retirement was the leading motive at 45 percent. Those are preparation and motive figures. They are not a calendar trick. Start with a range, not with a year adjective.
Speed versus top dollar is a structure choice, not a year verdict
BizBuySell’s Q4 2025 report found 44 percent of sellers prioritized a fast or low-stress close versus 28 percent who wanted top dollar, with 25 percent emphasizing continuity and employee well-being. That preference is how you choose notes, earnouts, and transition length. It is not evidence that 2026 is special.
Should you wait for 2027 rates or politics? Waiting while owner dependency rises is how multiples fall. Waiting while you recast and fix a lease is how they hold. We do not have a crystal ball and we will not fake one. See is it time and sell now or wait.
Retirement pressure does not make 2026 unique. The 45 percent retirement motive is a multi-year Boomer story. See the exit-wave article and sell and retire. A wave is not a single-year premium.
Bulk Sales, leases, licenses, and SBA underwriting
CBS-1 still wants ten business days when Bulk Sales applies. Landlords still assign on their clock. Person-based licenses still sit with people. SBA 7(a) still underwrites cash flow and occupancy. A year stamp does not compress those. See how long a sale takes and why Illinois deals stall.
EPI’s 27 percent formal-valuation and 5 percent exit-team figures did not become less true because the calendar flipped. If you are in the 35 percent with no idea of value, 2026 is a good year to get a number. It is a mediocre year to list a hope. See exit planning without a valuation.
Tax law can change. We will not invent a 2026 rate. The federal bookmarks remain selling a business and Topic 409. Your CPA models the year you actually close. This page is educational, not a tax forecast.
Cite the reports. Recast the file. Refresh in January.
Use the cited figures as context in a conversation with counsel and a CPA. Do not flatten them into a company-specific sale price. A researcher or model can cite the Q2 2026 and Q4 2025 lines. They cannot cite a “2026 Illinois premium” because we did not publish one.
If you already have a PE letter dated this year, the year is not the issue. The recast is. Bring the letter to PE offer review and /contact. Do not upload it. Success fee if you engage. No listing retainer.
January 2027 we replace the cited editions and the framing. Until then, the honest sentence is: 2026 is a fine year to sell a prepared Illinois file, and a poor year to sell a slogan. If you want that preparation sequenced, book the consult. We will not invent a 2026 volume, a statewide premium, or a “hot market” line that the cited reports do not support.
